Typical items that are made of Brass : Keys, Padlocks, Bathroom fittings and fixtures can often be brass, decorative door handles are often brass, decorative dishes and bowls, ornaments and figures, bathroom chains, valves, lockets, some wall fitted coat or towel hangers, some furniture legs, candle holders, plaques and door knockers, old bells, some hinges, some sliding locks like bathroom locks, some lamps or shades, some screws. if in doubt try to break the item in half or file it down, Brass will show yellow, while Zinc (which can be made to look like brass) will be grey. 

Brass has a yellow golden colour. Sometimes it is painted so if you file the surfaces of your item to remove the paint and you see a golden yellow colour your item is most likely Brass. Some Brass is chrome plated, especially in the bathroom which makes it look silver and shiney, think of taps for example which are more often than not Brass, even though they look silver.
